REPORT ON THE NIGERIA YOUTH SUMMIT HELD FROM

18TH-30TH MAY, 2009

ORGANIZER: VOICE OF CHILDREN INTERNATIONAL , ENUGU NIGERIA

FACILITATORS: PAM STENZEL OF ENLIGHTEN COMMUNICATIONS WITH COLIN HEARN AND DAVID CHRISTMAN OF MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN

-Personal report from Arch. Nkem Dim, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Voice of Children International, Nigeria

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A youth mobilization, leadership and re-orientation programme, was organized and held by voice of children international, Nigeria in collaboration with enlighten communications Inc. USA, from the 18th-30th May 2009. This program was entitled “DON’T SAY NO BODY TOLD ME” (GROWING IN TRUTH AND RESPONSIBILITY, THE NEED FOR CHASTITY, ABSTINENCE AND MORAL SOUNDNESS).

The program was held in three major Nigerian cities- Umuahia, Enugu, and Lagos. This program which included-“TOT”- “train the trainer” and a general rally was well attended by the target audiences. Pam Stenzel, the internationally acclaimed abstinence and chastity educator with her crew of professional actors: Colin Hearn and David Christman combined her personal story and extensive teenage pregnancy counseling experience with on-the-sport dramas to drive home the consequences of premarital sex. However, the two weeks programme was adjudged a huge success. We also had other presenters who spoke and educated Nigerian youths on leadership, skill acquisition techniques and personal empowerment programs

Meanwhile, the national television aired the program for 2 consecutive days (at about 10 minutes each day) and it was reported by major newspapers and magazines in the country.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The programme was designed to re-orientate the youths to better prepare them for the challenges ahead as leaders of tomorrow by imbibing the culture of integrity and chastity in their developmental process. To educate and remind them of the dangers and consequences of premarital sexual activities and to redirect them to embrace the religious and social teachings of God summed up in these words “the human person is created in dignity and we must do whatever it takes to keep and restore this dignity” The whole program is geared toward education and re-orientation so that no young person among them would ever say they made a wrong choice because “No body told me” Pam Stenzel taught the youths 4 basic things

v What loving right means

v What loving wrong means

v The consequences of loving wrong (physical, spiritual and emotional)

v Character formation

Rev. Prof. Izu M. Onyeocha educated the young people on leadership and their role as leaders of tomorrow; Dr. Patrick Nwume dealt with empowerment; Rev. Dr. John Odey and a host of other presentations. The Open Rally Concelebrated Mass was presided over by Most Rev. Dr. John Okoye (Catholic Bishop of Awgu) while the Homilist was a Swiss Schoenstatt Priest Very Rev. Fr. Alfred Kistler, Superior General of the Schoenstatt Fathers in Nigeria. We have over 10 priests and nuns in attendance. We even had more nuns who on a daily basis helped with the cooking and serving at the whole program. At the Rally was also a group of Nigerian cultural pop musicians:

J. Martins and the Brackets. These are loved by a lot of young Nigerians and sure they drew a lot of crowd at the Rally and made the event so lively.

IN ATTENDANCE.

In attendance were young people and teenagers, secondary school students, university undergraduates’ educationists, parents, teachers, religious tutors professionals and the media-(both electronic and print). The attendance cuts across denominational divide. These were mainly “YOUTH LEADERS” FROM ALL ACROSS NIGERIA. The most exciting presence was not just that of young persons from other Christian denominations but MOSLEM YOUTHS FROM ALL OVER THE MOSLEM STATES OF NIGERIA. Their presence in all the three trainings really enhanced the whole program and gave it a National face. They were so happy that we invited them and even gave them chances to lead in prayers during the whole summit.

On the whole, a total of over 1000 youth leaders from all the nooks and cranny of the country attended the TOT (training of trainers) program which lasted for 3 days at each of the centers. At the mass rally held at Enugu, more than 15,000 youths attended.

BENEFITS OF THE PROGRAMME TO NIGERIAN YOUTHS.

In a nutshell, the benefit of the programme to the Nigeria youths, is to change the mindset of our youths from immorality to that of moral soundness for positive development and to prepare them for the challenges ahead.

COST TO VOICE OF CHILDREN

Though VOC ministries expended a huge sum of money to organize this program and even had to borrow from the bank, the benefits of the program to our youths can not be quantified in terms of money.

However, the board of VOC, Nigeria believes that no amount of money would compensate for one soul lost to immorality and negative development, what more a whole generation of our entire future leaders who are drifting and are in dire need for positive directional guidance  for the future of our great nation and humanity.

VOTE OF THANKS

My gratitude goes to God who in his mercy has made this program a success amidst all the challenges we had. We were challenged, YES but was God on our side? Absolutely YES. To the Holy Spirit we who is the primary agent of evangelization we say, thanks a million.

I, Nkem Dim on behalf of the members of the board of directors of VOC, Nigeria, wish to thank the entire members of the board of directors of VOICE OF CHILDREN IN USA AND Germany and all our partners and friends  and donors who have contributed in one way or the other to the success of this enormous program.

Special thanks to Glenn and MaryJane Creamers for their unequalled generosity. May you be rewarded most abundantly.

We pray that the almighty God shall replenish you all mightily

Regards,

Arch. Nkem Dim

Chairman, board of directors

VOC, Nigeria.

MIVA AUSTRIA ASSISTS VOICE OF CHILDREN WITH MOBILITY

Recently Voice of Children was blessed with a new "Toyota Hilux" from MIVA AUSTRIA. This has been a dream all these years. Now we would be able to get through many of the bad roads that normally make our work very difficult. This Truck came through a combined financial effort from Sisters of Peter Claver in Rome, Italy, The Pontzor Family, Athens-Georgia, USA, and some Austrian Friends of Voice while Miva Austria Championed the whole effort. We are eternally grateful and this would be of great assitance to us in our journey of love to the most vulnerable persons in Southeastern Nigeria.(Insert picture of truck

VOICE RENOVATES NEW OFFICE SPACE

Voice of Children recently embarked in the renovation of a new office space. The need for this space was inevitable because our little room could no longer take the number of persons that daily knock on the doors of our ministry for help. Secondly we have been longing for a better space that would accomodate our computer academy for our children and other persons who would like to take advantage of this opportunity. We have also been scouting for a space that would give our board of Trustees a place to have their regular meetings. These dreams are presently being realised We were fortunate to get a place precisely above out former (tiny room office) The renovations are going on right now and we would continue to update you as things progress. Thanks to all our benefactors and benefactors. Without you all these would not be possible. (Insert pictures of the renovation)

KELECHI AMA-KALU: MEDICAL NEWS

All regular visitors to our website would remember this our child. She continues to undergo medical treatment in Columbus-Georgia, USA. Dr. Namaan continues to assist us in this regard with Dr. Goldman. A few days ago another tissue expander was inserted in her so as to give the doctors more tissues to use during her final surgery. Kelechi is doing well.

THE JOURNEY NEW ENDS:OUR HANDS ARE FULL AGAIN

Waooh! When the number of persons we assist came to 136 last year we were almost making promises to ourselves that we would just stop at this number because of financial constraints but the good Lord always have a plan. After the graduation of our high school students last July, we wanted to remain just that number but before long, our hands we filled to the brim again. We are happy to announce that as at today the number of persons served by Voice of Children International is 142 persons. This includes orphans, handicapped children, unwed mothers and women who are abused. Once more without the help of our worldwide cycle of friends, we can never do this. Here are the pictures of some of our new intakes.

VISIT TO VOICE OF CHILDREN IN COLUMBUS, GA

I visited the Voice of Children apartment in Columbus Georgia to get things ready for the arrival of our ten year old girl Kelechi Ama-Kanu in the United States for specialized medical treatments. During this trip I also met with Dr. Vincent Naman who is presently working on Kelechi Ezediegwu (our boy with the fire accident) to discuss how best we can get his treatment finished in due course. Dr. Naman is pleased with how things are moving and is intending to perform about three to four more plastic surgeries on Kelechi and then he will be ready to return back to Nigeria. Kelechi is also very happy about how things are progressing with him.

A DREAM COME THROUGH!
KEKECHI AMA-KANU ARRIVES USA.

All Glory to God! At about 2.45pm this afternoon our 10 year old girl Kelechi Ama-Kanu safely arrived the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, Atlanta, Georgia. I was there at the airport to receive her. This is really a dream come through. We have waited for the last three years to bring Kelechi here for neuro, plastic and orthopedic surgeries. Doctors Goldman, Naman and  Leeland McLuskey all of Columbus, Georgia will be taking care of Kelechi’s specialized medical treatment. Kelechi does not speak English except for few words like Good morning and thank you. We hope that she will learn some English as she spends the next months here in USA. We are grateful to all of benefactors and benefactresses for all their help and assistance.

Just for fun, we have two “Kelechis” in the house right now. Both the girl and the boy have the same Nigerian (Igbo) first names and both have indicated their desire to keep their first names. We are still in the process of finding a distinguishing element between the two especially when they are together and you want to address one of them. I will let you all decide how we deal with this fun situation.

Voice of Children rejoices with Gabriel Ebuka Egbo for successful orthopedic surgery at St. Francis Hospital, Columbus, Georgia through the hands of Dr. Leeland McLuskey. Ebuka lost a limb to a ghasty auto mobile accident in Nigeria but had a big complication with the amputation. We decided to fly him to the USA for specialized treatment in Columbus, GA. He arrived USA on December 8th, 2006 and left back to Nigeria this afternoon after a successful surgery, therapies and fitting of prosthesis. He is excited to regain a normal life and cannot wait to play soccer with his both legs. We thank all our benefactors and benefactoresses for all their help and assistance. I already spoke with him and he said, "Father I am happy to be home but i have to adjust to the situation in our country again. Thanks for giving me hope." Ebuka we are praying for you and we wish you all the best.

Kelechi Ama-kanu went to the American Embassy this morning for an interview for a Visa. We all remember that Kelechi was abused by her own father who used a machete on her head thus leaving her with a serious brain injury. This injury is so serious that further delay without a neurosurgery would result in probable blindness and paralysis. Through the help of Congressman Jack Kingston and his office staff in Savannah Georgia, Sue Wieczorek(Voice volunteer coordinator) and other men and women of good will Kelechi without much troubles secure a visa that would grant her entrance into the United States. We are already looking into flight possibilities and we hope she will get to the USA by the first week of June 2007. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this dream a reality. Kelechi has been in line for this treatment for almost four years since Voice of Children can only take care of so many children at a time in the USA. So the departure of Ebuka on the 11th indeed was a door opener for Kelechi. We pray for her safe arrival to the USA and ask that you please keep her in your prayers and support us as much as you can to provide her room and board her in the USA.
