Major Capital Projects and Needs

1.    Major Capital Projects: Residential Facility (orphanage)

Estimated to cost: $250,000. This will be a facility that will accommodate our orphans, handicapped children and unwed mothers. There will be a section here for our nuns who run the place to live in) until now, some of our children have lived through our foster parenting program. This facility will also house our children who return from the United States after treatment. This will serve as a recuperating place for them. Most of these foster parents take in our children and unwed mothers help us take care of them and we pay for room and board. All our handicapped children, some of the orphans and unwed mothers live in a rented facility and we commute to them in order to support our people. Recently Voice of Children secured a land and had it cleared and surveyed. This is to say that the land that will hold our own facility is in place but we need the finances to start off. Even though this project is major, it is a facility that will be divided into three categories namely: Residence for orphans, Residence for handicapped children and residence for unwed mothers. The key is where our people can lay down their heads and call a "home"

2.    New Health Care Facility

Estimated to cost: $150,000.  The numbers of fam¬ilies and children who currently go without proper health care in the region where we serve reaches well above 124,000. Due to lack of medical facility people die day and night without proper care. We already have a good piece of land which has been donated to us for this purpose but we do not yet have the financial means to begin this noble project. Many children die daily from lack of care during delivery. Minor issues eventually turn into great ones that claim lives because of lack of medical facilities.

3.    Yearly Budget of 150,000: Voice of Children serves about 140 persons.

These include orphans, handicapped children, neglected and abandoned children and unwed mothers. We provide room and board including medical cares for these persons. Every year we provide tuition, books and educational resources for more than 84 children who are in most need. The reason for this is that in almost all the states in Southeastern Nigeria, one has to pay for his or her education. This is true both for private and public schools in great, middle and high school.. Part of this budget also goes for the support of our unwed mothers and their children. The reason for this support is that “Child Support” is still a foreign concept in Nigeria. When a girl gets pregnant out of wedlock, it becomes her sole responsibility in most of the cases to figure out how to handle the situation. Most families because of the shame this issue carries with it, does not make the situation better in any way. Our expenses also go to support our children in foster families.

4.    Medium Project:

A Water borehole estimated at 35,000. Water is a serious issue for us and our children do not have clean and safe water for drinking. Most of the time, we have to buy water from water tankers in the city and this is so expensive for us. Most of the time the nuns resort to boiling and filtering water just to make sure that the children do not contact any sickness through bad water. The water we have is not even safe for showers not to talk of drinking them. We would like to drill a water well that will have an electric water pump attached to it and then an overhead tank build for easy water distribution.

5.    Average Project:

Yearly traveling expenses of 2-4 children who come to the USA for medical treatment. This is estimated to cost about 15,000 every year. Each year we try with the help of local doctors in Columbus GA to bring 2-4 children to the USA for specialized medical treatments. The reason for this is for both lack of personnel in Nigeria to perform these treatments and lack of adequate medical facilities and equipments to effect the different procedures. Most of the time immigration, visa and traveling cost of each child is about 3,500 for each child. We have two boys in Columbus, GA undergoing specialized medical treatments and we are in the process of bringing an Eleven year old girl for neuro-surgery in Columbus. Her father due to some medical condition lost his senses and used a machete on her head and this resulted in a bad brain injury that if not corrected could lead to blindness and paralysis.

6.    Small Project:

Quarterly school expenses of our children: This is estimated to cost about 10,000 every quarter. Voice of Children pays the tuition and school expenses of about 70 children every quarter. This is always a major huddle for us to cross each time we come to the beginning of a quarter. Any help to defray these costs will be well appreciated.

7.    Self help projects:

Palm Plantation: $25,000: Voice of Children because of our belief that you do no give people fish but you teach them how to fish engages in self help agricultural projects. These projects range from vegetable gardens to yam farms and pineapple plantations. Voice of Children has recently researched on the planting of palm trees so as to harvest palm oil from these palms. The oil with the kernels are very lucrative and this will go a long way in helping us in self sustenance. The planting and care of 1000 palms has been estimated to cost us about 25,000 dollars. This is about 25dollars per palm. This money God willing according to palm specialists will be recovered after three to five years because the first fruits are expected to ripe within three to four years of planting. This project will assist us in the next three years to be able to generate some income for ourselves to take care of some of our needs. In this way we are also teaching the children how to fend for themselves.

8.    A Toyota Hilux Truck (An equivalent of the USA model of Toyota Tacoma truck) $28,000

Due to our involvement in Agriculture, Voice of Children needs a truck to help us work the farms and carry our produce to the cites. This truck will be a great asset to Voice of Children because we would be able to use it both for all the running around in the house and for agricultural purposes. This is a great need because of the bad road we have to play on a daily basis.

9.    A Mini Bus for Transportation: $25,000

We are faced on a daily basis with the means of transporting a good number of our children from one place to another. Because of the large number of the people we serve with the three quarter of the people being children, we are in a serious need of a Mini Bus which will be used to convey the children and unwed mothers from point A to point B. Even to run the children from one school to the other is a big problem for us. We have a small car that is used by the nuns to address this issue but it can only take five persons at a time. A bigger Van would make the trips easier and less time and energy would be consumed.

10.      Computers: 25,000

Voice of Children in 2002 opened a computer center for the children and people in need to use. This computer center has been very helpful in order to keep the children and others in touch with the larger community. This center is also equipped with a satellite that gives internet access. The computers we have here are mostly bad now and needs replacement. We would need about 30 computers to replace these old computers so as to continue to give our children and others around us the chance to use computers and be connected to the larger community.
